My name is Mattis, I'm 23 years old and from Luleå in northern Sweden, currently residing in Malmö.
Until 2011 I'd barely been outside of Scandinavia. As a toddler, I went with my family to the Canary Islands. In 2004, I went to Dublin with my older brother and a friend to see my reunited favorite band The Pixies play. Besides this and much traveling in Sweden, I'd only crossed the border to Finland a couple of times and after finishing high school, I moved to Oslo to work.
So in 2011 I left Europe for the first time, on my own I went to explore Central America. I visited Havana and Viñales in Cuba, and then I backpacked through all of the Central American countries except Costa Rica and Panama, finding there was too much to explore in the other countries, for the three months of my journey to seem even closely sufficient. Tikal, Antigua, the lake Atitlán, Cobán and the capital (although a sketchy trip) in Guatemala were all highlights. Tulum, Mexico; Dangriga and Belize City, Belize; Perquìn and La Libertad, El Salvador, and León, Nicaragua, also provided me with dear experiences.
Since this, my first big trip, I'm really looking forward to getting away for another one. A reason why I chose to travel Central America was for an ambition I would like to continue pursuing for the rest of my life, of having visited every country in the world. While I've regarded backpacking West Africa my next goal in this pursuit, it does seem now that my next journey will be a longer stay in Brazil this winter. So I won't be crossing that many countries off my list just now; just a really big one.
