I an an inveterate traveler, having started solo train travel at the age of 8. While attending college in Arkansas I began hiking and backpacking, which I continue to do today. I have hiked trails in over 40 countries on four continents and have made 54 trips to Europe and/or Asia and several to South America, Central America, and Canada. I have hiked/backpacked in 44 of the lower 48 states in the USA. My favorite countries to hike in are Austria, Germany, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Turkey, the UK, and Canada. Last year I had bilateral knee replacement surgery, which my doctors said was a result of hiking for over 50 years, so my future treks will be limited to carrying no more than a day pack and not a fully loaded backpack. My favorite travel writers are Paul Theroux, Pico Iyer, Bill Bryson, and Mark Twain. I began bird watching with my grandfather in 1947 at the age of 6, am still an avid birdwatcher, and have been on bird watching trips on four continents. I have an extensive travel library, and yes, there are over 20 Lonely Planet books in it.
